TEN OF TED'S: Selected Sermons From The Oxford Years
We were asked to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of Rev. Ted Atkinson by compiling a short list of his sermons into a small booklet. Ted saved 35 years worth of sermons, a vast collection. To assist the selection process, the editors began with sermons they most remembered. The ten printed in this booklet were the result of those memories.
We have arranged the order of these sermons into seasonal groupings from the church calendar: Advent/Christmas, Lent/Easter, and special themes in Ordinary Time.
Ted's theological, literacy, historical, and existential knowledge is illuminated in all of his sermons, and it glows with imagery and metaphor. He was a keen observer and an able assimilator of many different disciplines which shines forth in these sermons.
One recurrent theme found in many of these sermons is that Ted was human, shared his doubts with his flock, and endeared himself to us for this honesty. He said his job was not to point us toward his unwavering faith, but to point us to God. This he did very well.
Another theme is Ted's firm commitment that "God will win in the end." No matter how often Ted might tell us of his own skepticism, faith always prevailed- he clearly was steadfast to the end.
